Definitions

A web site is a combination of several files connected through hyperlinks. (For examle, the underlined words, prev and next, on the left side of this page are hyperlinks.) The files of a web site can be text or images, which are the most common, or sounds, animations, videos, document images, etc. All of the files are separate from the others. Without links, each file would be as independent as the pieces of an unfinished puzzle.

A web site is stored on a web server. A web server is simply a computer with an internet connection but with one small distinction. It is set up so that anyone in the world with an internet connection can view its contents. The basic structure of the computer and file processing actions like copying or deleting are the same as on any other computer.

In order to view a web site stored on a web server, a person uses a web browser. The server delivers individual web pages to the web browser as the viewer follows hyperlinks through a web site. A web page is one or more files written with special text tags that a web browser decodes. An HTML text file is all that is necessary to make a web page, but additional files like images, sounds, or video are generally combined with the HTML file.
